Caldara finally admitted ties to blogger defending his use of "bitch-slapped" on KOA

Summary: After Colorado Media Matters items pointing out the failure of the Denver media to identify the relationship between Independence Institute President Jon Caldara and the "blogger" who has been defending Caldara's on-air use of the term "bitch-slapped," Caldara acknowledged on his January 28 Newsradio 850 KOA broadcast that blogger Ari Armstrong is a former employee of the "free-market" think tank. Hours earlier, as a guest on 630 KHOW-AM's The Peter Boyles Show, Caldara failed to disclose the fact.

Following a Colorado Media Matters item, Newsradio 850 KOA's Jon Caldara on his January 28 broadcast admitted that the "blogger" who has been publicly defending Caldara's on-air use of the misogynistic expression "bitch-slapped" is in fact a former employee of the Independence Institute, of which Caldara is president. As Colorado Media Matters noted, earlier on January 28, Caldara failed to reveal his association with blogger Ari Armstrong while appearing as a guest on sister station 630 KHOW-AM's The Peter Boyles Show.

Colorado Media Matters has repeatedly noted (here, here, and here) the failure of Denver media to identify Caldara's relationship with Armstrong, who also has appeared on the Boyles program and as a source in a January 26 Rocky Mountain News article defending Caldara's use of "bitch-slapped" during his January 21 broadcast to describe a debate exchange between Democratic presidential candidates Sen. Barack Obama (IL) and Sen. Hillary Clinton (NY). As Colorado Media Matters has pointed out, Armstrong has worked as a contributing author for the Independence Institute.

Caldara acknowledged the relationship on his January 28 broadcast, which followed Boyles' program by more than 12 hours, stating that "Ari's been a good friend and has done some work at the Independence Institute over the years."

As Colorado Media Matters noted, the Independence Institute website lists 24 "articles" by Armstrong. Articles identifying him as a senior fellow or as a research associate for the Independence Institute also appear on the website of Dave Kopel, the think tank's research director. Caldara has been president of the Independence Institute since November 1998.

From the January 28 broadcast of Newsradio 850 KOA's The Jon Caldara Show:

CALDARA: FreeColorado.com is a libertarian website. It's done by Ari Armstrong. Ari's been a good friend and has done some work at the Independence Institute over the years. And on his own he decided to take a look at these guys who are trying to put the pressure on me, calling me misogynistic. And to find out the exact same guys used the exact same misogynistic term "bitch slap," it just tickles me -- tickles me to no end.
