Face the State headline distorted news article's quote to add a bogus attack on "liberal[s]"

Summary: The "news" website Face the State distorted a quote in a Boulder Daily Camera article to assert in a December 14 headline that "[l]iberal 'misconceptions and misinformation' defeat[ed]" a church's business and residential development plan in Longmont. In fact, the comment in the article, which appeared on the Rocky Mountain News' website, did not attribute the reported "misconceptions and misinformation" to any particular group.

On December 14, the "news" website Face the State linked to a Boulder Daily Camera article, posted on the Rocky Mountain News' website, about a church's decision to drop its controversial plan to create a 348-acre business and residential development on land the city of Longmont would annex for that purpose. However, Face the State's headline link -- "Liberal 'misconceptions and misinformation' defeat church plans in Longmont" -- distorted comments made in the article, which did not attribute the alleged "misconceptions and misinformation" to any particular group, political or otherwise.

Widely reported opposition to the Union project included arguments over tax issues and whether the city government should be annexing land on behalf of a religious organization, in this case, the Longmont-based LifeBridge Christian Church. The Daily Camera article reported on the church's decision to withdraw the annexation proposal and quoted a LifeBridge official:

"Though we believe the opposition to Union is based on misconceptions and misinformation, our goal is to serve the community, rather than divide it," Martin Dickey, head of LifeBridge's development arm, 4C, wrote in a statement. LifeBridge's proposed development would include homes, retail or commercial spaces, religious facilities and a sports arena.

The article ran additional excerpts from the church's public statement, none of which blamed "liberal[s]" for the opposition, contrary to the Face the State headline.

Face the State describes itself as "a one-stop-shop for political news affecting Coloradans." As Colorado Media Matters has documented repeatedly, Face the State frequently publishes misleading headlines on its aggregated news articles, uses the noun "Democrat" ungrammatically as an adjective, and makes other distortions that advance conservative viewpoints and denigrate liberal positions and political figures.
