"Gunny" Bob called nonprofit Planned Parenthood a "for-profit organization"
Summary: In a November 14 interview with Colorado for Equal Rights founder Kristi Burton, "Gunny" Bob Newman of Newsradio 850 KOA falsely asserted that the family-planning services provider Planned Parenthood is a "for-profit organization." In fact, Planned Parenthood Federation of America is a 501(c)(3) organization, according to forms filed with the Internal Revenue Service -- which defines such groups as nonprofits -- and the group's website.
During his November 14 show, Newsradio 850 KOA host "Gunny" Bob Newman falsely stated that the family-planning services provider Planned Parenthood is a "for-profit organization." In fact, according to Planned Parenthood Federation of America's (PPFA) 2005 Form 990 filing with the Internal Revenue Service, PPFA is a 501(c)(3) entity, which the IRS classifies as nonprofit. The national organization's website also identifies PPFA as a 501(c)(3) organization and notes the IRS 501(c)(4) status -- which also applies to nonprofits -- of its political and lobbying arm, Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
Planned Parenthood's Colorado chapter, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, is classified as a "nonprofit corporation" by the Colorado Secretary of State.
Newman was interviewing Colorado for Equal Rights founder Kristi Burton, who is leading efforts for a statewide ballot initiative to amend the state constitution. If approved by voters, the measure "would extend constitutional protections from the moment of conception, guaranteeing every fertilized egg the right to life, liberty, equality of justice and due process of law," according to a November 14 Denver Post article. The article reported on the Colorado Supreme Court's November 13 decision allowing Burton's organization to collect signatures for placing the measure on the ballot.
After suggesting to Burton that she should "apply for a grant because that's going to help you ... get the word out" about her initiative, Newman asserted, "Planned Parenthood has received in the last eight years nearly 2 billion -- with a 'b' -- dollars of our tax dollars so that they can improve their abortion mill system." He added, "I would think that if the government was willing to give them, a for-profit organization -- they average 34, 35 million in profit every single year -- I would think that your organization could get some money."
However, according to PPFA's 2005-2006 annual report, "Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., is a tax-exempt corporation under Internal Revenue Service code section 501(c)(3) and is not a private foundation (Tax ID #13-1644147). Contributions are tax-deductible." The IRS states, "To be tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, an organization must be organized and operated exclusively for exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3), and none of its earnings may inure to any private shareholder or individual." According to its latest annual report, in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2006, PPFA had total revenue of $902.8 million and expenses totaling $847 million.
From the November 14 broadcast of Newsradio 850 KOA's The Gunny Bob Show:
NEWMAN: Kristi, has Colorado for Equal Rights applied for any grants or contracts of some sort from the government?
BURTON: No. No. Certainly not.
NEWMAN: Well, I would think that you would. I would think you would apply for a grant because that's going to help you, you know, get the word out and stuff like that. You're a nonprofit, right?
BURTON: Actually we can't be nonprofit on a political issue. We can't form a 501(c)(3); we have to have an issue committee.
NEWMAN: OK. OK. Are you a not -- could you be a not-for-profit?
BURTON: As far as I understand, we have to be an issue committee, which means it's not tax-deductible.
NEWMAN: Well, I'd apply anyway. Try to get some money. Because Planned Parenthood, Planned Parenthood has received in the last eight years nearly 2 billion -- with a "b" -- dollars of our tax dollars so that they can improve their abortion mill system. I would think that if the government was willing to give them, a for-profit organization -- they average 34, 35 million in profit every single year -- I would think that your organization could get some money.
BURTON: I wish. But -- and that's the unfortunate thing. Planned Parenthood is unfortunately about money and we're about life and equal rights. And there's a big difference there.
NEWMAN: And there, there is the difference.

Kristi Burton claims that she and Colorado for Equal Rights are about "life and equal rights". but based on the exchange quoted above, they're actually about lies and denial of rights - a woman's right to choose.
If you're opposed to abortion, then don't have one. But don't force your opinions on others.
Many, perhaps most, Americans don't belief that a right to choose to kill an unborn baby exists. But I suppose that any liberal wouldn't have a problem resting comfortably in the assurance by the almighty Supreme Court that the right rests in the emanations from the penumbras of more specific guarantees of liberty found in the U.S. Constitution. I can't wait to find out what other rights come from the vibes of shadows...
Right HO4A. You must be talking about the shadowy vibes from the Supreme Court activist righties that stopped the Florida recount and put Bush in office. A more 'penumbrous' decision cannot be found in Supreme Court history with the exception of Dred Scott. Are you trying to snow us with big words and billowy bull shi..?
I've been unsuccessful in getting any kind of "contributor" information for this new "front" colorado for equal rights. Nothing to be surprised about, as it's a for profit, private enterprise. My best guess is the reds will funnel a ton of dough through kristi's "black op'" in hopes they can get a whirlwind going over the conception ruse. I'm figuring it Kinda goes like this: kristi's's people beat the ballot proposal drum through ad's funded by the reds after wadhams reviews those ads. the zealots come out and while they're casting their vote for the ballot initiative, they vote red on the rest of the ballot. If all goes well for 'em, and the reds steal another election, big payday for kristi. Business as usual. look for herr streicher to be in on it with a few colorado for equal life spokespeople on his obersturmbanfuehrer broadcasts.
A penumbra is an astronomical term describing the partial shadow in an eclipse or the edge of a sunspot — and it is another way to describe something unclear or uncertain. “Emanation” is a scientific term for gas made from radioactive decay — it also means “an emission.”
The turn of phrase comes from the Supreme Court decision in Roe vs Wade. Funny how folks vigorously defend it yet don't know much about it.
So layman style-We're not sure where this right comes from and how to spell it out exactly, but we'll go with it.
Next time they go with this line of reasoning, I hope it's when they try to discern our right to vote an equal share of the entire US treasury to anyone making less than 50k per year. 2 weeks later, when the country has no money and is falling apart, at least I'll have my RV and my precious right.
Forget which Greek philosopher came up with it, but no true democracy lasts long because the people will eventually realize they can vote to give themselves all the money. Probably why we have a republic. Congress and their handlers can vote themselves the money instead. Much gooder, wouldn't you say?
Almost forgot, 903 million revenue minus 847 expenses equals where is the other 56 million? Not for profit, so where did it go? Perhaps the 401(c)(4) PPAL lobbying arm?
Also forgot this:
"Are you trying to snow us with big words and billowy bull shi..?"
Probably the same reaction in 1973.
QV, hey, at least taxes are "low". never mind 1 trillion for the Iraq disaster on an IOU our kids and grandkids will have to cover. at least the top 1% have theirs! Kids shouldn't have the right to medical care unless their parents can afford it, right, QV? SCHIP is money comin' out of your pocket for the common good.....what a waste, right, QV?! 4,000 killed, 45,000 wounded in Iraq. Maimed United States Military Iraqi Freedom heroes told that the shrapnel still in their bodies was not "Service Related".(CNN Sunday:"Broken Government, The Administration's War on the VA"). Taking care of wounded Veterans is a waste of taxpayer money, right, QV? Infrastructure, clean water, edible food? I know, QV....a waste of your money. Debt? Deficit? Who cares? repub treason? no big deal, right QV? oh, that's right, outing a covert CIA operative isn't treason if a red does it, right QV? Be proud, QV, at least you "care" enough to advocate rights of the unborn........until they're born! Then they're on their own, then they better come up with the bucks for their own medical care, right QV? don't be comin' to QV for help, just 'cause ya got born! I always knew ronnie and nancy ran the country through an astrologer........I just didn't know the astrologer was you, QV!
Whew, all over the map here.
CHIP is good, get it for those that really can't afford health care (not the family of 4 that makes 82k/yr) and don't use my tax money for abortions.
VA is a good organization with some questionable employees and administrators (just like any other organization). My own experience has shown me some great people and some who abuse the system, as in trying to tell me how to get my VA rating bumped over time. Agin this is emplyees, not the vets going ot the VA.
We're the richest nation in the world. If my taxes go to anyone to improve their quality of life, go for it. It's just money, I can't use it when I'm dead, but not using it may let someone die.
Debt and deficit are not party specific. And neither am I come to thnk of it.
Outing an operative earns you free kicks in the nuts from said operative and his/her family until they get tired.
Pro-life is from conception to the grave. Gets lost in the fact that millions die each year, but it is out there. One step at a time.
And astrology is crap.
Quick question, PP was founded by a eugenicist who thought we should control the African-American population. Why are there more abortion clinics and abortions in predominantly African-American neighborhoods?
Thank you for replying. Where to start? The Democratic SCHIP legislation that bush vetoed has Colorado at a 62,000.00 threshold, not 82,000. Each state has their own threshold. 62000 is 1 $31.00 an hour job or 2 $15.50 jobs. $15.50 is livable IF you have employer provided care. (why do I get the feeling you have it?) In that case no SCHIP is needed. Just for reference, private insurance like BCBS or UHC are about $800.00 a month for a family of 4 basic coverage.........NO PREXISTING CONDITIONS! The math shows about 10,000.00 medical premiums per year. Colorado ranks very high on the children uninsured list with 17% of all Colorado kids uninsured. So the SCHIP may or may not fit your moral parameters, but whether you are pro or anti-choice is irrelevant. SCHIP's necessary. About this "eugenicist". I'm all ears to new information. Please give us his name, where you sourced it, and why it's important . (spongebob, chaput, robertson, roberts, Falwell or his heirs, fox noise, prager, savage, herr streicher, sniffer, limbaugh, scammity, ex-pastor ted etc. don't count. We'll need to know who "briefed" them). As far as the outing of a covert CIA operative, "free kicks in the nuts" says nothing. Is it or is it not treason if a repub outs a covert agent? Simple question. Deserves a simple answer. If a Democrat outs a covert agent, it's treason, agreed?. Is it treason if a red repub outs a covert agent?...... And what should happen to the offender (even if he's a red)? Now, About the VA. Your reply leads me to believe you are a former U.S. Military vet. Me too. This administration is undermining the very soldiers whom they sent to war. I have no doubt you know that the administration has ordered that anyone wounded badly enough to fail to live up to their entire deployment has to refund his/her bonuses. (CNN,MSNBC) Now that's ronni reagan sissy conservatism if I ever saw it. blackwater, aegis, Haliburton, kbr, no bid cost plus contracts are emblematic of this administration and their lackeys' waste of your tax dollars while endeavoring to enrich their top 1% friends. Anyway, if you served, thanks for your service and I'll look forward to hearing from you.
Employer provided health care is few and far between. I pay over 350/mo for my family of 6 for BCBS, top program EPO. A family friend is an insurance broker and he said the best he could get me comparable to that was 400/mo.
The SCHIP numbers I referred to were from the recent fed proposal and from memory. If it's fed, it's across the board is my understanding. This is a program I believe should always be funded, let's just make sure it's for people who can't afford anything else (or suddenly can no longer afford it through work).
I beg to differ on whether position makes a difference. If you are pro-life, you have to support getting everyone health care. My opinion.
PP founder is Margaret Sanger. Google her and eugenics. Oh so reliable Wikipedia gives you some info, but womensenews, which supports her work for birth control, at least will confront her eugenics influenced views. Why is it important? To one extreme (I'm assuming your position here), it's not. Her views have nothing to do with a "right". To the other extreme, read half the other hits you get on that Google search that are sites dealing strictly with the African-American community and see the importance of it to them.
On treason, maybe that was a reply best understood in person. Kicks in the nuts for life means said outer was wrong and will never be able to amend that wrong. Treason is treason no matter who you are. Unfortunately, "our" politicians on both sides of the aisle have learned to insulate themselves entirely too well and pardon entirely too many scapegoats. It's a no risk-all win for them.
The bonus story was incorrect. It was one guy they screwed up on, he did not have to pay it back. Actually against Army policy. (MSNBC)
And yes, 12 years Army. Thanks for the support, but really I got a good deal. Much fun, great people, intersting scenery. So thanks for the paycheck.
Letkemann,
I just reread your post and apologize for not noting this sooner. Thank you for your service as well.
If I sounded flippant about my service, you may understand this better than those who never served. It's because I feel guilty every time I see a WWII vet because I only spent 1 of the last 4 years in theater. I didn't have to go through what they did. Most Vietnam vets I have known saw an exponentially greater amount of stuff than I did, so I bow to them as well. The soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines I see now still astound me. They are awesome people. Maybe that's because they are trying to live up to the examples of heroes we had in the last century.
Rambling now, going to bed.
QV, 10 years United States Army gets a salute and thanks from this 1 hitch/1 combat tour guy. Yeah, politicians from both sides are slimy, and the entire bunch are concerned more in enriching themselves than serving their constituents. BUT.......if I was a conservative values voter I'd feel betrayed if my party heads committed treason, and I'd own up to it. SCHIP is federal but with individual state thresholds. Colorado's was 62,000 (bipartisan support). There are currently more than 1,000 cases of disputed bonuses to wounded vets. I'll continue reading everything I can about Sanger and PP (thank you for the referrals). But I support a woman's right to make her own decisions concerning her own body. Anyway, thank you for the gentlemanly exchange, I think we simply and respectfully disagree.
Old joke:
Two Catholic men eating breakfast at the counter before work...
"Did you know John's a Republican now? Has been for a few months now apparently."
"That's impossible, I saw John at church just last week!"
I think the Democratic party, since it has become the abortion protectorate, has lost sight of the fact that most Christians actually believe in the Dem's traditional planks of social justice and societal obligations. They just have to go with the lesser of two evils due to abortion, which happens to be the conservative side. Unfortunately, so many Christan extremists have found a new audience and flock in the conservative party that jingoism and tub thumping have become part of their dogma.
The one thing the Republican's have going for them from a Christian view (and not so well) is the concept of subsidiarity. Leave to the states most issues and the feds can step in on the big ones. Personally I like this better than the feds stepping in on every issue, as if one size really fits all.
Conservative party is not my party and neither is the liberal. Hard for me to feel betrayed by most policiticans these days as the lawyer maxim applies to them. Their lying when their lips move. To be fair, there are quite a few trying to do the right thing. Term limits would help this situation out tremendously.
As for the wounded vets, I am confident that the DOD will fix that. If for no other reason (and it's sad to say), but it's bad PR and bad for recruiting. I would think they will fix it moreso because it's the right thing to do.
Yes we disagree. If you ever get bored, just for kicks and to avoid all the "because God said so" arguments, check out my atheist buddies and their view at godlessprolifers.org
Also, to eliminate any questions regarding my being on this site, I found this site while researching PP's 401(3)(c) status due to some recent IRS moves that seemed one sided. I have no idea who Gunny Bob is and rarely to I listen to talking heads and mouthpieces.
Was nice to see the Rockies in the site header though. Spent 3 yrs at Ft. Carson and we loved Colorado.
I am a new subscriber to your website. I found it by looking for references to Kristi Burton whom I admire. I heard and read Newman's interview with Burton where Kristi sounds so humble and truthful to stear away from Newman's coaxing her to apply for federal funding as Planned Parenthood receives so ignoblely. She knows better and I salute her for asserting: Planned Parenthood is for the money; her organization is for LIFE.
I'm really trying to reach Kristi Burton's organization and your website was the only one I found on Yahoo directed to her. I had to subscribe to your website in order to comment and ask you to help me find her organization's website or her email address.
Your help is greatly apreciated. Please excuse my naivete as I'm too old to care how dumb my request may be to you for asking an advisary for assistance.
