Colorado Media Matters hosts panel on "Immigration Myths, Messaging, and the Media"

July 28, 2008 (Denver) -- Colorado Media Matters will host a panel discussion on immigration and the media at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, at the Denver Press Club, 1330 Glenarm Place in downtown Denver. The panel will focus on the media's coverage of immigration, the messaging that surrounds the issue in Colorado, and the ways in which both influence public opinion.

Colorado Media Matters is pleased to present panelists Polly Baca, former Colorado state senator, and president and CEO of the Latin American Research and Service Agency; Lisa Duran, executive director of Rights for All People; Erin Rosa, an award-winning journalist who covers immigration for the Colorado Independent; and Chris Fresquez, publisher, president and CEO of the weekly bilingual newspaper El Semanario.

The panelists will discuss Colorado Media Matters' report documenting state broadcast media outlets and personalities distorting facts and making dubious claims to dispense misinformation regarding immigration-related issues. This research complements Media Matters Action Network's report "Fear & Loathing in Prime Time: Immigration Myths and Cable News," which documents the "rhetoric surrounding illegal immigration that is heard on cable news." Colorado Media Matters' report details the widely repeated and unsubstantiated assertions that illegal immigrants are responsible for the deaths of 25 U.S. citizens each day, that they are responsible for a purported surge in U.S. leprosy cases, and that they comprise a disproportionate percentage of the U.S. prison population.

Colorado Media Matters editorial director Bill Menezes will moderate the discussion.
