Discussing Idol contestant, KHOW's Caplis said he doesn't want winner to be "some male who goes out there and tries to act as effeminate" as possible
Summary: As he and 630 KHOW-AM co-host Craig Silverman discussed an American Idol contestant on their March 6 broadcast, Dan Caplis stated, "The vast majority of gay friends I have" don't act "in the slightest bit effeminate." He later added, "I would not want the American Idol to be this Danny Noriega guy, because I don't want that role model." Colorado Media Matters has documented a pattern of Caplis making anti-gay remarks on his show.
During a discussion about American Idol contestant Danny Noriega, Dan Caplis told co-host Craig Silverman on their March 6 630 KHOW-AM broadcast, "The vast majority of gay friends I have, you know, don't act in the slightest bit effeminate. But Danny Noriega, I think, wants to stand out that way." Caplis later stated, "I would not want the American Idol to be this Danny Noriega guy, because I don't want that role model," adding, "You know, have to believe there are a lot of kids watching this -- like our kids, who are very musical ... And I don't want that message that, hey, this is a role model -- some male who goes out there and tries to act as effeminate as usually (sic) possible. Forget that. I don't want that role model."
Silverman brought up Noriega -- who was voted off the show the previous night -- during a discussion about controversial American Idol contestants. Silverman described Noriega as "openly gay," adding, "So that's another controversy." Caplis later said of Noriega, "[T]his guy's kind of fun to watch right now, and he is talented, but do I want the American Idol in the end to be somebody who feels they have to go out of their way to act as effeminate as humanly possible? No, I would not want that."
Later in the broadcast, after a caller said, "I think it's kind of weird that you're talking about the whole gay thing," and asked, "[W]hat about women who come on, or even guys, who flaunt their sexuality to the point of ridiculousness? What's the difference?" Caplis answered, "Oh, I'll tell you the difference. And maybe 'difference' isn't the right word. But the reason why I would not want as the American Idol in the end -- not that the future of the free world turns on it or anything, but it's a big deal -- I would not want the American Idol to be this Danny Noriega guy, because I don't want that role model. You know, have to believe there are a lot of kids watching this -- like our kids, who are very musical ... And I don't want that message that, hey, this is a role model -- some male who goes out there and tries to act as effeminate as usually (sic) possible. Forget that. I don't want that role model."
As Colorado Media Matters has documented, Caplis has made anti-gay comments numerous on his radio program:
- During a discussion of former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Peter Pace's remark that he thinks homosexual acts are "immoral" and comparable to adultery, Caplis said on his March 14, 2007, broadcast, "I don't think gay people are immoral ... At the same time, do I think the act itself is immoral? Yes. And I think the vast majority of people do." In fact, Gallup polling showed that more than half of the respondents in a May 2006 survey said they considered homosexuality "acceptable."
- Discussing a June 25, 2007, Rocky Mountain News front-page photo spread documenting Denver's 2007 gay pride parade, Caplis called the News' decision to publish a photo of a 4-year old boy "in the arms of ... his gay mom and her girlfriend, and then naming him" a "gross obscenity" and "a political ploy" that "cannot help that child." Silverman said, "And you don't want this 4-year-old to be the recipient of jokes and the teasing and the discrimination that goes with gay people," to which Caplis responded, "Do people tell jokes about gay people because gay sex is not natural? Yes."
- After calling Jerry Lewis' use of the slur "fag" during the comedian's annual Labor Day muscular dystrophy telethon "derogatory," Caplis on his September 5, 2007, broadcast went on to say that he would not "judge" a "buddy" for making "some sort of derogatory comment for a gay person" if "some guy comes up ... making a sloppy pass" at him in a bar. Continuing the discussion about "gay pass[es]" later in the broadcast, Caplis asked his producer to play the theme from Deliverance, a 1972 movie that depicts a male character being violently sodomized.
- On his September 18, 2007, show, Caplis stated, "I walk the talk when it comes to loving and respecting gays" -- in contrast to what he characterized as "a lot of these fern bar liberals who like to throw around the word 'bigot' and then never go out and actually show respect to gay people." Caplis said later: "I view homosexuality as abnormal. Does that mean that I disrespect gays? No, not at all, and I've proven that."
From the March 6 broadcast of 630 KHOW-AM's The Caplis & Silverman Show:
SILVERMAN: Now they have another guy, this guy Noriega. What's his name?
CAPLIS: Danny.
SILVERMAN: Danny Noriega, who's openly gay. Right? Who's competing. So that's another controversy. But, and I don't watch the show, but haven't there been discussions in the past about -- who was it, Clay Aiken who won? Didn't people think that he might be gay? And even Ryan Seacrest, I know that either Jay Leno or David Letterman makes jokes about his sexuality. So, and the other thing I've seen is Simon Cowell wears those really tight T-shirts. I don't quite understand that, either.
CAPLIS: Oh, I'd be very surprised if much of the audience would have a problem with the winner being, you know, gay. Now this Danny Noriega guy, he seems to go out of his way; I think it's part of his schtick to just act as effeminate as a male possibly can. Now, I think your experience is probably the same as mine. The vast majority of gay friends I have, you know, don't act in the slightest bit effeminate. But Danny Noriega, I think, wants to stand out that way. Now, that's a fair question -- not the gay thing, but the behavior thing. I mean, hey, if I'm sittin' there pickin' up my phone to call in votes, do I want in the end -- this guy's kind of fun to watch right now, and he is talented, but do I want the American Idol in the end to be somebody who feels they have to go out of their way to act as effeminate as humanly possible? No, I would not want that.
[...]
CALLER: Hey, guys. I think it's kind of weird that you're talking about the whole gay thing, and, because what about women who come on, or even guys, who flaunt their sexuality to the point of ridiculousness? What's the difference? I don't really get it. Or maybe [unintelligible] --
SILVERMAN: I don't know -- it's just a visceral thing with me.
CAPLIS: Oh, I'll tell you the difference. And maybe "difference" isn't the right word. But the reason why I would not want as the American Idol in the end -- not that the future of the free world turns on it or anything, but it's a big deal -- I would not want the American Idol to be this Danny Noriega guy, because I don't want that role model. You know, have to believe there are a lot of kids watching this -- like our kids, who are very musical -- 'cause the caliber of the talent is enormous. And I don't want that message that, hey, this is a role model -- some male who goes out there and tries to act as effeminate as usually possible. Forget that. I don't want that role model.
SILVERMAN: Now, you think he's just acting, or that's who he is?
CAPLIS: No idea.

I'm amazed we didn't hear that Dan's best friends are gay, that he had gay roommates, that he hires gays and represents gays and that he walks the walk unlike the rest of you fernbar liberals out there.
I'm not even sure what a fernbar liberal is.
Can't remember if it was thursday or friday, but on one of those shows sniffer actually called for the principal of a DPS school to be charged with a felony and fired for taking too long to call the police after allegations of sexual improprieties. Those allegations may well turn out to be true. There may be charges filed. Point is, the principal was trying to sort things out when the story broke. Nothing's for sure yet. But sniffer was more than willing to see a person's carreer ruined and their life wrecked WITHOUT knowing more than a tiny shred of the story. Add to that, sniffer actually threatened to beat up a 9 year old kid (remember, sniffer's a boxer, he saved a Police Officer's life at the CU/CSU game, and he stared OJ Simpson down when OJ ogled the Mrs., so he is capable physically of beating up a 9 year old.) I guess after all that, it's not too big a stretch to say the guy ain't exactly the most rational, giving, understanding and fair chistian messenger out there. In sniffer's mind, Jesus would hang 'em all (unless sniffer was one of 'em) and ask questions later. So sniffer's behavior isn't inconsistent when he turns that fire and brimstone on gay people. Like NEWMAN said. "Keep on talkin', Dan".
I wonder how many "kids" grew up watching "Liberace" on TV. God forbid. Interesting info on this jerk LETKEMANN. You sure OJ wasn't ogling "Sniffer"?
Not sure at all, BIGBOOF. Nor am I sure that sniffer wasn't ogling OJ! You bring up an interesting point. Down through the years there's been lots of conservatives bashing gay people for one reason or another. limbaugh, medved, boortz, haggard, larry craig, to mention a few. Those names mentioned have been mired in innuendo/accusations/suspicions concerning their own sexuality. Makes you wonder if sniffer is another case of "thou doth protest too much".
How true LETKEMANN. The words of Shakespeare come to mind regarding these clowns. "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". Sniffer certainly "doth protest too much, thou artless hasty witted scurvy knave, thou withered weather bitten- vile worm". Run OJ.
BOOF......Nicely done.
You too LETKEMANN.
You guys are hilarious. Letkemann, I’m going to have to try and dig back to find Dan’s comments about saving a boulder cop at a CU game, as that sounds fascinating. Caplis is so uh…conflicted on gay issues it is hard to judge his um…orientation. More of what he thinks is his ‘love the sinner, hate the sin’ attitude, I guess. Though he seems to bring a lot of ‘love to sin, hate other sinners’ to his arguments. I’ll have to follow up with some of his amazing statements regarding gay marriage and other issues.
If my understanding is correct and as Nate said, I have never witnessed a guy trying to get so much mileage out of living in a group setting on campus with other caddy scholarship winners, and when a couple of them happen to be gay. And Caplis continually said ‘I chose’ to have gay roommates. I can’t quite imagine that it was even something discussed that much in mid-seventies, or where Caplis was even asked to choose, but what ever you say, Dan.
It does brings to mind one of Caplis’ famous Danecdotes, when, if I remember correctly, Dan says he was invited to Barry Fey’s home as a student government rep., dealing with concerts on campus. The Who or at least Pete Townshend were at Fey’s at the same time, and I believe Caplis said that he suddenly realized he was playing pinball on a ‘Pinball Wizard’ pinball machine with Pete Townshend, who has rather famously mentioned his same-sex experimentation.
If Caplis talked back then as much as he talks now about his obsession with having gay roommates, and showed his fixation on anal intercourse like he showed on his ‘family show’ on Monday, I’m not sure that Barry Fey wasn’t just inviting Caplis over to help him find a love connection. Just a thought, lol. JMO
PS, I hope Caplis didn’t do any drinking and driving back then….he says he has never driven impaired…ever…..Concur, NEWMAN. Sniffer's "conflicted-ness" jumps out like a sore thumb. FYI, here's how I remember the "saved the Police Officer's life at the CU/CSU game" tale sniffer regaled his listeners with the week after the '06 Rocky Mountain Shootout. Seems to me that according to sniffer, as he was approaching the stadium from the south, he spied a Police Officer trying to intervene in a heated discussion between, as I remember sniffer describing them, "several CSU-supporting toughs" and a CU-supporting male/female couple. The situation, as I remember sniffer describing it, got worse as more "CSU toughs" gathered 'round and physically accosted the female CU fan in front of her "terrified boy friend". Sniffer's account of the resulting melee has him fearlessly wading into the "mob" and separating the victims from their attackers physically, and also pulling the thugs off the Police Officer. All this seemingly happened without any of the other 76,000 fans at the game noticing anything. I'm wondering if there might have been a police report filed, or if maybe the officer just never realized what danger he was in and what a horrible fate sniffer saved him from. But who knows? As improbable as it sounds, maybe the whole thing happened exactly the way I remember sniffer describing it. On a more up to date topic, here's wondering if sniffer's next hit on Senator Obama might be something like "Spitzer was set up by Senator Obama's campaign to remove a Clinton super delegate". Yesterday's hatchet job about "Ferraro's just telling the truth" was so stale and over used by the time sniffer pulled it off the fax machine that it was laughable. Only Silverman's too slow or unprepared or worse to not have eviscerated sniffer on that one. Anyway, the "attended the radical madrassa", "wore the bin laden garb", "he's a muslim", "he saved 300,000 bucks on the home purchase", "doesn't wear a flag lapel pin", "didn't salute at the National Anthem", "has ties to the radical chuch minister", "we'll find out who Obama really is", "voted present 1,000 times in Illinois", "the wife hates America", "hasn't passed any legislation", "admitted in his book he smoked pot", "is a Daly machine politician", ad nauseum ain't workin', so sniffer might as well jump on the old "Obama set up Spitzer" scam. The red national committee sees the tidal wave coming. If Obama wins the nomination he'll roll grampa munster in the general. The marching orders goin' out to sniffer and every other red yakker are clear......Smear Obama every day, every show. Silverman really disappoints me. I wish he'd man up and lose his sniffer's boy reputation. I'm not sayin' quit.....I'm sayin' stand up to the bully wannabe.
