Discussing ballot proposal, KHOW's Caplis provided biology lesson: "Humans don't have eggs"

Summary: On February 27, while discussing a Colorado speech by Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, host Dan Caplis of 630 KHOW-AM criticized a Rocky Mountain News headline that he said read "Huckabee endorses rights for fertilized egg." Stating that Huckabee "endorsed" a proposed Colorado "human life amendment," Caplis said that he himself favored "protection for human beings at the earliest stage of development" and later asserted, "My only point is this: Humans don't lay eggs. Humans don't have eggs. You know, so that's just so inaccurate."

On the February 27 broadcast of 630 KHOW-AM's The Caplis & Silverman Show, host Dan Caplis criticized the Rocky Mountain News for publishing what he termed a "factually, medically" inaccurate headline that, according to Caplis, read "Huckabee endorses rights for fertilized egg." Caplis asserted, "[W]hen you want to minimize the humanity of somebody you want to use as property," you "change the terminology, which was done to African-Americans and, you know, is now being done to humans at early stages." He added, "My only point is this: Humans don't lay eggs. Humans don't have eggs. You know, so that's just so inaccurate."

After saying that he attended Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's February 22 speech at a Leadership Program of the Rockies retreat in Colorado Springs, during which Huckabee "endorsed the human life amendment," Caplis criticized the News headline and later claimed, "Humans don't have eggs."

From the February 27 broadcast of 630 KHOW-AM's The Caplis & Silverman Show:

CAPLIS: Want to mention to you quickly that, had a chance to hear Mike Huckabee speak -- Leadership Program of the Rockies -- last Friday night, and I thought Huckabee was just very, very impressive. And then, it was interesting, Huckabee endorsed the human life amendment, and then to see the headline -- I think it was in the Rocky -- it was to the effect of, "Huckabee endorses rights for fertilized egg." And I had to laugh when I saw that, because this is what historically has been done, right, when you want to minimize the humanity of somebody you want to use as property. You change the terminology, which was done to African-Americans and, you know, is now being done to humans at early stages. My only point is this: Humans don't lay eggs. Humans don't have eggs. You know, so that's just so inaccurate -- factually, medically, just be accurate about it. Say that Huckabee and whoever else does, and I do, you know, favor protection for human beings at the earliest stage of development. What's so hard about being accurate? And don't be that inaccurate, in any case. Humans don't have eggs. They don't lay eggs.

The article to which Caplis apparently referred was an Associated Press report that was posted February 26 on the News' website and headlined "Huckabee endorses fertilized eggs measure." According to the article, "A proposed ballot measure that would define personhood as a fertilized egg picked up the endorsement of Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister." The article further noted that "[i]n a statement Monday, Huckabee said the amendment proposed by 20-year-old Kristi Burton and her group, Colorado for Equal Rights, would send a clear message that every human life has value."

According to the "Questions and Answers" section of a Colorado for Equal Rights information sheet regarding the proposed amendment, "Basic Biology tells us that once an egg is fertilized it becomes a unique human life and is no longer an egg. We believe that unique human is a person, like you only smaller." (emphasis added)
