"Gunny" Bob labeled Quaker organization "hate group" for criticizing his anti-Muslim comments
Summary: Addressing public reaction to anti-Muslim comments he made on his May 8 show, Newsradio 850 KOA host "Gunny" Bob Newman in a website posting labeled a Quaker organization that criticized his remarks a "hate group." Further, on his May 11 broadcast, Newman called people who might protest at his book signings "holier-than-thou, politically correct, anti-First Amendment, namby-pamby fools."
On the May 11 broadcast of his Newsradio 850 KOA radio show, "Gunny" Bob Newman spoke indirectly about some of the public reaction to remarks he made on his May 8 show, including his suggestion that "every Muslim immigrant to America who holds a green card, a visa, or who is a naturalized citizen [should] be required by law to wear a GPS tracking bracelet at all times." As Colorado Media Matters noted, Newman also urged that the U.S. government "bug their places of work and their residences" and monitor "[a]ll mosques and community centers." He added, "If they don't like the idea, or if they refuse, throw their asses out of this country." Newman made the comments while discussing the breakup of an alleged terrorist plot to attack U.S. soldiers at New Jersey's Fort Dix.
In addition to his on-air remarks, Newman's Newsradio 850 KOA website also included several postings attacking critics of his statements. Before a change in content late on May 14, the site had featured an item titled "Leftist Hate Group Attacks Gunny" that labeled the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) a "leftist, anti-America, anti-Iraqi-freedom ... anti-US military hate group." The organization, founded by Quakers to pursue "service, development, social justice, and peace programs," on May 11 issued a press release condemning Newman's remarks and calling for him to be taken off the air. In the same web posting and a related one, Newman stated that the organization sent him an "ugly hate-speech email" in which it "chastised the Gunny's deep-seated desire to prevent Muslim terrorists from killing more Americans."
Since Colorado Media Matters pointed out Newman's May 8 remarks, groups including the Anti-Defamation League, the AFSC, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Colorado publicly have condemned the substance of his statements. In addition, the progressive organization ProgressNow launched an online campaign asking the public to contact advertisers of Newman's show and urge them to withdraw their support of the broadcast.
On his May 11 program, Newman stated that, according to an acquaintance, visitors to "liberal hate blogs" are suggesting "that liberals should protest me and my right to freedom of speech" at signings of his new book, The War for America (Cumberland House Publishing, June 2007). Newman labeled people who might protest him as "holier-than-thou, politically correct, anti-First Amendment, namby-pamby fools" and asserted that "many of them qualify as fascists."
From the May 11 broadcast of Newsradio 850 KOA's The Gunny Bob Show:
NEWMAN: How 'bout this one: I spoke with a guy several days ago while having a cigar at Barlow's Premium Cigars & Pipes in Lafayette, Colorado, who told me that -- he keeps an eye on the liberal hate blogs, and apparently there are tens of thousands of them -- he keeps an eye on 'em. I don't know if he keeps an eye on 'em all. But he was reading on some of the blogs where some of the liberals are suggesting that they come -- I've got a new book being released next month called The War for America. And the suggestion is out there that liberals should protest me and my right to freedom of speech at the book signings that I'm gonna have scheduled. And I, I'm curious, if they do that, you know, if they, they come out -- because I'll be going all over the place on, you know, on the books, book signing tours. If, if the liberals come and they protest my right to freedom of speech, and they interfere -- you know, they're outside and they're trying to prevent people from exercising their rights, as liberals tend to do, you know, from, from trying to get through the door and, you know, get a signed copy of my new book, what should I do? I want your advice. What should I do? 303-713-8585. I'm Gunny Bob, Newsradio 850 KOA. 11:27. This is what we're talking about when it comes to the -- these holier-than-thou, politically correct, anti-First Amendment, namby-pamby fools, in, in my view, and fascists -- many of them qualify as fascists. Are we just supposed to let them get away with this? I don't think we can. We can't be doing that.
Later in the broadcast, Newman noted what he called "the irony and the hypocrisy" of those who would "protest my First Amendment rights with their First Amendment rights," calling it "the hate of the liberal left."
NEWMAN: I'm just curious because, you know, the liberal blogs, according to a, a source of mine who watches the liberal blogs, did say that, that some people are talking about protest -- when I have my book signings, that they're going to try to, you know, prevent people from getting into the stores and, and, and protest my First Amendment rights with their First Amendment rights, there's the irony and the hypocrisy. But, but they don't care about that. This is the hate of the liberal left.
Newman did not address the apparent contradiction of calling for protection of his civil rights while seeking to eliminate civil rights for a specific class of people -- Muslim immigrants -- based solely on their religion. In contrast, a May 14 article by the online political daily news site Colorado Confidential quoted Cathryn Hazouri, executive director of the ACLU of Colorado, as saying, "What Gunny Bob said is not only bigoted, it's totally ignorant of the U.S. Constitution. His statement suggests that the government should single out people of a certain religion and treat them differently. That violates the First Amendment."

"Apparent contradiction" is right! He's so blinded by militant rage at some nebulous concept 'terrorism' that he can't discern his own illogic. He is the quintissential Islamophobe.
Gunny Bob's been dancing around the edges of hate speech for as long as I've heard him. He saw this Fort Dix media coverage as an opportunity to fertilize the seeds of bigotry he's planted within his listeners. He let loose - he needs to get off the air.
I agree. If there was ever a radio "personality" who deserved to be fired, it's Gunny Bob.
poor little bobby. after listening last night, I think he's going to try to figure out how to let his callers say all the hateful stuff and while he just sits and nods quietly.
no doubt herr streicher is on the fringes. but i think that as this thing seeks its own level and we find out what talking to the advertisers does, olinger and larsen will eventually get this idiot under control. what i never have been able to figure out about him is how somebody out there that far is on 850. all kidding aside, while 850 and clear channel's programming has always leaned right with few exceptions, never before this guy has outright hate speech been promoted, defended and flaunted. if herr streicher were to be taken seriously and his rants acted upon, the very constitution he swore to protect while active duty USMC would be usurped. maybe he's just trying to promote his latest waste of paper.
Letke, Thanks for the kind words on the other thread. When I meant I was giving up, I meant that no matter what I had said or shown, it was not going to get through, so with him, I gave up.
On this point, with the NSA stuff showing that Nixon listened to quakers and I believe Bush did too, when are they going to be noted by Hannity, Rush, or BillO as an enemy. I bet O'Reilly will even find that Soros is a Quaker!
Still, its a rare day that a quacker insults a Quaker. Ol' sarge must be feelin' his oats.
you're welcome friedbergboy. again, thanks for all the research. now we have 6 bucks a month as too big a raise for u.s. military personnel, midnight bedside arm twisting incidents by gonzales and andy card, with of all people, ashcroft as the "good guy", fully half of the u.s. attorneys as targets for political dismissal, and on and on. ABC and CBS have yet to report on gonzales's visit to ashcroft in the hospital just before comey was "convinced" to sign off on the warrentless wiretapping scam. the mass media for what it's worth seems clueless. in all my years i've never seen complicity on a grander scale. 10 years ago herr streicher would not have even considered spewing the filth of 5/8/07. but the landscape has changed and not for the better. not only was newman bulwarked by olinger and larsen, when advertisers acted he was not required to personally apologize. olinger's press release was like a guilty feeling parent apologizing for a miscreant juvenile delinquent son, knowing the kid isn't sorry and that it's gonna happen again real soon. there has simply got to be a huge amount of money out there as an incentive for all of these people to abandon principle, sell out integrity, and not only look the other way but cheer as creatures like herr streicher, sniffer, rosen et al mouth those faxed neocon talking points on a daily basis. here's one for ya: betcha sniffer doesn't even bring up any of the current stories other than the imimgration accord that got clotured yesterday. we talked about ideology....this is a perfect example.
my email to GUMMY Boob,
Dear Bob Newman,
The origin of the name NewmanEnglish: Bastardization (sorry bout the BIG word) nickname for a newcomer to a place, from Middle English newe + man new + man. This form has also been used as an Anglicization of many of the cognates listed below and of non-cognate equivalents such as Ashkenazic Jewish Chodosh, or more distantly related cognates such as Czech Novák. Cognates: Czech: (from German): Najman. Danish, Norwegian, Swedish: Nyman. Dutch, Flemish: Neijman, Neyman, Nieman, Nijman, Numan. German: Naumann, Neumann; Neander (a learned calque using Greek ne- + andr- new + man). Jewish (Ashkenazic): Nauman, Naumann, Neuman, Neumann. Low German: Niemann, Niuwemann.I am one of those who have never listened to your slanted hate show or even traffic reports on KOA85. My father put in 2 T.O.D.'s in Nam, retiring as Gunnery Sargent in the U.S.M.C. in 1969, after 27 years. He then went into law enforcement. And retired after 15 years I talked to the receptionist at your station, (she even thinks you're a laughable asshole), about how asinine it was for you to make a comment about Muslims and GPS's, etc. Maybe, "Sarge" it is you who should wear an ankle bracelet.instead of spewing hate at anyone different than yourself. I'm blue eyed, blond haired, what was referred to in WWII as "Good Aryan stock". I guess, I wouldn't have been a good little Nazi though. By the way, I'm a LIBERAL because of people like you. And I thank you. Spew your silliness, while you're show is aired to the less socially adept . You truly are a member of "The Flock of DoDo's". And we know where the political DoDo's are after the last election. His High Lord DoDo will get a library in the village that's lost it's Idiot, that he's from in Texas. Maybe you could be a security guard - greeter like at Walmart? What do you think?Cells and nooses? Treason against the United States? Your aim is a bit low and to the left , I believe. I know you list yourself as Independent, true? You've certainly heard of Haliburton, I assume. Where are your acidic comments regarding sending MY fellow Americans, friends and loved ones (yours too, as you say on your site) into battle without the equipment they deserve and the U.S. citizens PAID for? I might be giving short shrift to you, since I don't listen to you. Have you got nooses and cells and advocate suspended habeas corpus set out for those folks? What was that man's name? Dick Cheney?PS- I've begun verifying your bona fides . From Mortarman to Recruiting Duty to SERE & Anti-Terrorism expert / trainer status? Is there much call for that in Colorado? Or was it Covert Ops at Camps Pendleton and LeJeune? Quite impressive in a twenty year lifer's career. I note that no mention of service in Nam is listed. You have accomplished much in the peace time Corps.Half your career has probably been dressing up smelling like Brasso on a college campus somewhere, Right? So in TEN years or more - SERE and A-T Tactics? I know it's illegal to buy, sell or wear a Congressional Medal of Honor that's not been awarded to you. Otherwise I'm sure you'd have that too. I'm not sure the law covers Bronze & Silver Stars, Purple Hearts, etc. I'll look into that, maybe.Support Our Troops, Don't Follow the Incompetents that sent them. And even worse for you is that you encourage others who still think like yourself.Have a good retirement,Sincerely J.M. RowInteresting
According to receptionist at Clear Channel they do have ONE progressive/liberal show as I'm sure you realize Peter BOIL ne Boyle is also employed by CC even though on another radio channel.
J Row
